Inside the Design Museum.
Helsinki Tourism
As you reach the end of Bulevardi, you will come to the buildings of the former Sinebrychoff Brewery, which was established in 1819 and is the oldest brewery in Finland. The Sinebrychoff Art Museum (Sinebrychoffin Taidemuseo; tel: 09-1733 6460; www.sinebrychoffintaidemuseo.fi; Tue, Thu and Fri 11am–6pm, Wed 11am–8pm, Sat–Sun 10am–5pm), which specialises in old European art, is housed at Bulevardi 40, and includes several grandiose rooms containing Old Masters and miniatures.
Don’t miss the Hietalahdentori # [map], best known for its flea market. The goods are usually just bric-a-brac and clothes, but this market is one of the best places in Helsinki to watch large numbers of locals in action. It opens daily from June to September, but the weekend (Sat 8am–4pm, Sun 10am–4pm) is by far the best and busiest time to go. On the side of the square, the market hall sells fresh local produce (Mon–Fri 8am–6pm, Sat 8am–4pm, June–Aug also Sun 10am–4pm). Bulevardi holds many fashionable art galleries and boutiques, which spill into neighbouring streets. One of the intersecting streets, Fredrikinkatu (known locally as Freda) has several trendy boutiques and design shops. One block south and parallel to Bulevardi is Uudenmaankatu and the pedestrianised Iso-Roobertinkatu, which form a part of the ‘bar-hopping’ district for the young and trendy. Another two blocks further on is the Johannes Church. This rather regal affair with two piercing stiletto spires is the largest church in Helsinki and a particularly popular place for choral concerts, with excellent acoustics. Across the street, at Korkeavuorenkatu 23, the Design Museum (Designmuseo; tel: 09-622 0540; www.designmuseum.fi; June–Aug daily 11am–6pm, Sept–May Tue 11am–8pm, Wed–Sun 11am–6pm) showcases Finland’s famed skills in objets and furniture design, including Aalto furniture, Lapponia jewellery and many new names (for more information, click here).
